Novice Training Course

From your couch to your first triathlon in 16 Weeks

What is it?

The Novice Training Course is a 16 week training plan that will get newcomers to the sport ready for their first sprint distance triathlon; 426m swim, 21km bike and 5km run. You may have no experience in the three disciplines or you may, for example, already run and cycle but are not a confident swimmer. We will provide coached swimming, cycling and running sessions to get you ready for your first event.

The Course

There will be a combination of:

•     Weekly swimming, cycling and running sessions

•     Specific sessions aimed at teaching triathlon skills and knowledge. For example: how to transition between disciplines; back to back (‘brick’) sessions; simple bike maintenance; equipment advice; nutrition.

The Training Schedule

Here is the provisional schedule:

Run - 8.30am Saturday, Nonsuch Park

Bike - 7.30pm Wednesday Westcroft Leisure Centre (spin class). As the weather gets better, group rides on Sunday mornings and cycle skills training on Sunday afternoons may be added.

Swim - 9.00pm Thursday, Cheam Leisure Centre

Specific sessions as described under ‘The Course’ will be added later.

The Event

The skills learned during the 16 week course will be put into practice on Monday 7th May 2018 at a very popular local event, the Thames Turbo Sprint Triathlon. The swim is in the heated Hampton Lido, followed by a bike course along fairly flat local roads, and finishing up with a run in Bushy Park.

There is also the opportunity to enter the Kingfisher Aquathlon a week earlier on 29th April 2018. This event features either a 400m pool swim and a 9km trail run or a new shorter distance event of 200m swim and 4.5km trail run.

Of course, you do not have to take part in these events but you will be well supported if you do!

Entry Criteria and Equipment Needed

This course is designed for novices so all we ask is that you are capable of swimming 1 length (25m), using any stroke, without resting. You will need to either own or borrow a bike and have a helmet.

The cost of the course is £20 and includes a year’s complimentary membership of Westcroft Triathlon Club. For non-members of Everyone Active some session fees will be payable. For example, the current swim session fee is £4.85.

Details of the club’s coaches are given here
