Lockdown Tri Team Challenge 3: Oceans 7 Swim challenge

29th March – 17th May 2021

For our latest club challenge, we’re adding up how far our members swim over the next few weeks, with the aim of covering the same distance as the Oceans Seven challenge. This is a marathon open water swimming challenge that only nineteen swimmers have completed. It was devised in 2008 as the swimming equivalent of the Seven Summits mountaineering challenge.

The swims are:

  1. English Channel – 21 miles 💯%
  2. North Channel – 21 miles between Scotland and Ireland 💯%
  3. Straight of Gibralter – 10 miles between Spain and Morocco 💯%
  4. Tsugaru Strait – 12 miles between the Japanese islands of Honshu and Hokkaido 💯%
  5. Cook Strait -16 miles between New Zealand’s North and South Islands 💯%
  6. Moloka’i Channel – 27 miles between the Hawaii islands of Moloka’i and O’ahu 💯%
  7. Catalina Channel – 20 miles between Santa Catalina Island and Los Angeles 💯%

Adam Walker was the first British swimmer to complete the challenge and you can read about his experience here http://www.adamwalkeroceans7.co.uk/oceans_seven.html

Results: Oceans Seven Swim Challenge – Smashed

Well, we didn’t see that coming. We set you an epic challenge of swimming 131 miles over 7 weeks, and you did it in 3 weeks!

A total of 34 adults and 15 juniors took part and although we said there would be no individual winners, we must give special mention to Jill Trowel who covered 23.5km and Harry Poole who covered 17.3km.

So what’s next? Well, no more challenges! It’s clear that many of you are now resuming regular training so we’re going to let you focus on your personal goals. We hope many will seize the chance to enter events in the coming months and proudly represent our club.
